After staging a great comeback to snatch a lucky draw in normal time, St Mel's were very much the dominant force in the extra-time period and eventually won by the comfortable margin of eight points, clinching their place in the Leinster Colleges' Senior A Football Championship final against Good Counsel of New Ross or St Pat's of Navan.
In front by four points with less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Moate CS appeared to be heading for a surprise victory over the Longford kingpins. However, three converted frees reduced the leeway to the minimum margin and it was William Murray who fired over a last-gasp equaliser in injury time to leave the score 1-7 to 0-10.
St Mel's goalkeeper, Darren Fay, expertly converted a penalty nine minutes into extra time. After Fay's goal the St Mel's side added a further brace of points to their tally before substitute Enda Williams added a second goal with nine minutes left to play.
