Irish Open: The likes of Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy will be joined by European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie when the Irish Open returns to Baltray next month.
The Scot will attempt to create another piece of history when he tees it up on the east coast and claim his fourth Irish Open title.
A winner in 1996, 1997 and 2007, Montgomerie is currently tied with Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer for the most wins.
With Harringon, McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke already having signalled their intentions to play at Co Louth the field for this year’s event is shaping up nicely.
And with record prize money on offer – the players will compete for a purse of €3 million – the organisers still hope to attract more big names to the event.
“I have enjoyed playing in Ireland throughout my career and I have to say that the Irish crowds are amongst the best in the world in terms of their knowledge of golf and their levels of support for the players” Montgomerie said today.
“All of the elements are in place for a terrific Irish Open. We have a three-time Major Champion in Padraig Harrington leading the way and some very exciting Irish players making their mark in the game.
“We have a great course and a strong sponsor so there is a real opportunity to build on those foundations and take the tournament forward.”
