All the Irish racing championships will be decided in the weekend's Leinster Trophy meeting at Mondello Park. The Dunlop Formula Vee Championship is between Ray Moore on 330 points and Brian Hearty on 301, with Enda O'Connor (271) and David Hall (270) chasing third place.
Moore is in fantastic form but will have to pull out all the stops and more if he is to prevent Hearty from winning his sixth consecutive title.
As well as the Vees, there is promise of good racing tomorrow with the Crossle and Stryker sports cars, plus the quick Formula Europas headed by championship leaders Keith Dempsey (109 points), Paul Dagg (98), Morgan Dempsey Jnr (96), Vivion Daly (79) and Robert Scott (70). The Irish Formula Europa drivers in Sunday's Leinster Trophy will also include Leslie Wright, Noel Roddy, Henry O'Friel, Peter le Bas and Declan Quigley, as well as some unknown English drivers who are not expected to be at the races against the regular Mondello experts.
It will be interesting to compare the lap times of the two-litre Opel-powered Formula Europa cars against the UK field of Formula Renaults, visiting the Co Kildare track for the first time. Two of Sunday's races to watch will be the final rounds of the Ford of Ireland Formula Ford Zetec Championship and the Dunlop RT2000 saloons. Alan Ring on 78 points leads James Murphy (76), Mark O'Connor (71), Stephen Kane (64) and George McAlpin (62) in the quick Zetecs. The RT racers are equally tough on the track. Brendan Donegan and John Whelan lead on 76 points each, Mark Turley on 73, David Donegan (68) and Jonathan Fildes (66). Gordon Kellett and Quentin Smith cannot be beaten in the two Yokohama saloon championships. Sunday's action concludes with a race for the usually very entertaining sidecars.
Eamonn Boland in his Subaru WRC is good for another local win in the Wexford Two-Day Rally, but he will be pushed by Michael Barrable in a Toyota Celica GT4, the experienced John Price in a Metro 6R4, Ford Escort drivers Melvyn Evans, Gary Midwinter, David Armstrong and Johnny O'Sullivan. Three more Metro 6R4s will be driven by UK drivers John Mercer, Phil Henderson and Lynden Farden.
This hugely popular event attracts a large UK entry and will be based this year in Rosslare, with rally headquarters at the Crosbie Cedars Hotel. Tomorrow's stages are in the Foulkmills-Campile area, and Sunday's stage locations are around Clonroche and Ballywilliam.
Ian Barrett (18) of Maynooth races his Triton Leastone in the British Formula Vee Championship race at Snetterton on Sunday. He has won four races this season including three in-a-row in the British series driving his Irish-built racing car. Dubliner Michael Cullen competes in the Ferrari Challenge races at Brno in the Czech Republic on Sunday.
He races a Ferrari 360 Modena and is looking good to finish third in the series.
