Moran faces Belfast test

These are busy times for Offaly teenager Eimear Moran

These are busy times for Offaly teenager Eimear Moran. A win and a first place in the junior women's single sculls at Ghent recently - matched at senior men's level by John Wholley - sets her up for today's Guinness Sculling Challenge in Belfast.

The women's race at 7 p.m. pits Phoebe Tanner of Bantry and Jillian McCracken of Belfast against Moran, who may represent Ireland at the World Junior Championships in August despite being only 17 and having a year left at this level. The favourite for the men's race, 15 minutes later is 22 years older: John Armstrong (39) of Lady Victoria BC takes on James Morris of Commercial and UCC's Serryth Colbert.

On a busy weekend, the Belfast Sprint Regatta tomorrow clashes with the Limerick regatta at O'Brien's Bridge. The Limerick event has what looks a tasty eights final between Neptune, Garda and NUIG, but Neptune have decided to send what is essentially an intermediate crew. The Garda crew is the same as the one that competed without much success at Ghent.

The shape of the Ireland team for the Seville World Cup next month changes with each week: Tony O'Connor and Gearoid Towey have expressed a preference for the lightweight pair rather than a four. No four will now travel and O'Connor and Towey will be trialled against other pairs next weekend in Cork, clashing with the prestigious Metropolitan regatta at Blessington.
