No fewer than 86 motions are down for discussion at the national convention of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland in the Montague Hotel, Portlaoise on Saturday. Many of the motions centre on the ever-contentious topic of handicapping. Other motions which will be debated concern an increase of the minimum number of members required to form an affiliated club; club qualifying rounds for the National Strokeplay championships and whether the winners of the national mixed team event should be allowed to defend their title if properly entered.
In a wide-ranging report, long-serving national secretary Peg Smith reflects on a number of issues influencing pitch and putt. The report covers the continuing influence of the Irish Sports Council, the PPUI's progress on the production of a strategic development plan and Ireland's success internationally during 2000, particularly the Irish women's win in Milan.
The only contested elections will be for treasurer, where Des Flanagan (Glenville) is opposed by Kildare and Leinster treasurer Breda Brophy (McDonagh) and for registrar where Liam Sherry (St Brigid's) is challenged by PJ Curtin (Kilmichael) and L O hUigin (ESB).
