Muckross hold nerve in shootout

Muckross Park well and truly laid to rest painful memories of losing their Senior League final on penalty strokes to Mount Anville in February when they booked their place in Thursday's Esat Digiphone Leinster Schools Senior Cup final by the same method, beating Wesley College 5-3 on strokes after their semi-final ended scoreless at Grange Road yesterday.

If nerves got the better of the Muckross players in February's shoot-out they were notable by their absence this time around. Nikki Keegan, Julie Motherway, Rachel Keegan, Anna McCormick and captain Lynsey Phelan kept their composure to slot away their strokes, while their Connacht under-21 goalkeeper Orla McGuinness made the save that put them through.

Wesley had the better of most of the game but were shaken by the loss, shortly before half time, of forward Laura McCoy who needed stitches in an eye wound after being hit by the ball. They had a goal disallowed early in the first half but then failed to convert several more good scoring opportunities, many of them created by the impressive Rachel Keegan and Lynn Beck in midfield.

Jean McDonnell forged most of Muckross Park's best openings but neither side was able to break the deadlock and strokes were needed to find a winner. Muckross Park will meet the winners of today's semi-final between holders Loreto Bray and Loreto Beaufort in Thursday's final.
