The television cameras come to Bohernabreena tomorrow to film the sport of `mud plugging' for a special sports feature.
Six sporting trials cars designed by Dublin twins Gordon and Philip Erskine will no doubt provide plenty of great footage. Racing will be the Erskines in their Erskine-Harley Davidson, Ken and Jonathan Fildes (Erskine-Yamaha), Percy Pennefather (Erskine-Suzuki), powered by motorcycle engines, Tony Farrell (Erskine-Opel), Stephen and Robert Bell (Erskine-VW) and Gordon Graves in the original Erskine-NSU. John Bolton, Brian Miley, Joe McCann, Alan Kilkenny, Alan Watkins, Roy Stewart, David Meeke and Ian Meredith are all possible challengers to the Erskine cars.
Eamonn Byrne contests rounds 10 and 11 of the Hewison Trophy Championship this weekend in Waterford City and Dungarvan with a perfect score of nine autotest wins, and appears unbeatable in his quest for a record six in-a-row championships and seven in total. However he is still a way off Dermot Carnegie's record of 10 wins.
Meanwhile, the Dundalk motorcycle road races to take place on June 24-25th next, will carry "international" status for the first time. Racing will take place on the superb Dundalk By-Pass Circuit, and a Dundalk festival of motorcycling events will include an arena trial, grasstrack racing and a parade of classic motorbikes.
The Europa Cup for 2.0 litre racing cars (formerly Formula Opel) will be promoted this year as Ireland's premier motor racing championship. The races will be run at Mondello Park and at Kirkistown, with races also scheduled for Knockhill in Scotland and Pembrey at Carmarthenshire in South Wales. Confirmed drivers include Paul Dagg (Drogheda), the 1999 Formula Ford Zetec champion, and double Irish Formula Ford 1600 champion Tony Rodgers.
