Munster need to find higher gear

Munster v Glasgow Musgrave Park, 7

Munster v Glasgow Musgrave Park, 7.30Rugby Celtic League: Three weeks ago the Irish side arrived in Hughenden for their Celtic Cup quarter-final, played well for a large portion of the match and then let Glasgow snatch it from them 18-14 as concentration levels dipped.

The crumb of comfort from that outing is that Munster now realise they have the measure of the side, if they perform to their ability and don't dip their form.

It is made somewhat more simple playing in front of home support in Musgrave Park and with Munster welcoming back Martin McPhail, Jason Holland and Denis Leamy, they have a little more bite in the back line and a stronger back row.

In fact with Leamy, David Wallace and Jim Williams, it's a fine back row.

Glasgow are no shrinking violets up front and demonstrated that last time out, particularly in the front row, where tackling will be heavy, while the Scots also have their international open-side flanker Donnie Macfadyen back in the line-up after missing last week's 26-25 win over The Borders.

Macfadyen is the only change to the Glasgow squad of 22, but the team has been vigorously reshuffled and four personnel changes, as well as two positional switches, have been made.

But Munster will see it as a match they need to win to bounce back into the upper mid-table. Currently they're just one place above Glasgow but have the same points (8).

Jeremy Staunton, with his two tries, three conversions and 16 penalties is currently the top Irish striker with 64 points but the team's hit rate has been poor - only four tries from five matches.

That needs drastic improving with clubs like Edinburgh and Connacht on 18 and 12 tries respectively. Even tonight's opponents have nine.
