Munster raise tempo for win

Munster rounded off their two-match Scottish tour with a merited win over Caledonia Reds at Kirkcaldy on Saturday

Munster rounded off their two-match Scottish tour with a merited win over Caledonia Reds at Kirkcaldy on Saturday. As with the previous match, however, the provincial champions drifted in and out of the game and only secured the victory in the closing stages.

The visitors failed to capitalise on their first half supremacy and were restricted to a 13-7 lead at the break.

An incisive run by Sean McCahill set up Dominic Crotty for the opening score after 10 minutes and Andrew Thompson landed a penalty 15 minutes later to stretch the lead. A try from a short penalty by Allen Quinlan made it 13-0 after 39 minutes, but Munster allowed Dougie Gray to weave his way over for a converted try on the stroke of halftime to keep the Scots in the game.

Caledonia made six changes at the break and re-started with increased vigour. Replacement stand-off, Keith Oddie, kicked three penalties as his side gained the upperhand, but a second Thompson penalty tied things at 16-16 entering the final quarter.
