Munster gave a rousing performance to beat Ulster 1-0 at Harlequin Park, Cork, last night to keep their slender hopes alive of retaining the interprovincial laurels .

The all-important goal was scored early in the first half by Nigel Buttimer, who was put through by fellow international John Jermyn. Mark Irwin just failed to equalise for Ulster in the last minute.

Much now depends on today's match between Leinster and Ulster, though if it's a draw, or a win for Ulster, the home side will be out of the reckoning despite last night's effort. The final game is between Munster and Leinster tomorrow.

Earlier yesterday, Leinster tuned up with a 4-1 win over the Shamrocks (Irish under-21s).
