Tennis/IFT Junior Series:The prestigious International Tennis Federation's junior series produced a number of interesting results in Donnybrook yesterday.

John Morrissey, a member of the local club, had a notable straight sets win over earlier giant-killer Sam Barry from Limerick.

Morrissey's astute placement and his service game proved too heavy and accurate for the Limerick boy.

"I feel I played well and I am delighted to be in the quarter-finals," he said afterwards.

Morrissey, however, faces the biggest task of all when he meets Alex Bull of Britain in today's match.

Bull showed slight vulnerability when losing seven games to Britain's Stewart Crerair before coming through in a little over the hour.

Tommy Murphy also kept the Irish flag flying having beaten the number two seed yesterday to this time oust Luka Starc from Slovenia 6-3, 6-4.

In the girls' series, Niamh Coveney of Cork had an impressive win over Emelia Banos of Britain but had difficulty in closing down the match in the second set.

The British girl levelled at 5-5 but Coveney got the vital break in the 11th game to run out a 6-1, 6-5 winner.

Coveney meets Emelia Askew of Britain in today's quarter-finals. The Cork girl teams up with top seeded Mariana Levova in the doubles.

Maria Morrissey, a sister of John, who on Monday scored a stunning victory over the US entry Emily Monell, lost out this time when beaten in straight sets by Britain's Lisa Whybourn 6-2, 6-2.
