THREE tries from Old Belvedere's Barry Murphy helped AIB secure a comprehensive win over the holders, Bank of Ireland, in, the Institute of Bankers' Cup final at St Paul's College in Raheny yesterday.
Murphy got AIB off the mark: after 20 minutes when he tapped a penalty to himself five yards out and dived over. AIB were awarded a penalty try two minutes later after winger John Lacey was impeded as he was about to touch the ball down.
Just before half-time Murphy, stretched AIB's lead to 19 points with an intercept try which hem converted from the touchline.
AIB's teamwork was superior and with hooker Sean O'Kane and captain Bobby Brennan leading the forwards and Murphy in control at scrum-half, there seemed no way back for Bank of Ireland.
However, the holders enjoyed their best spell in the third quarter and a try, conversion, two penalties from Old Crescent's Brian Begley cut the gap to 22-13.
But AIB finished strongly. After tries by centres Niall Murray and Offaly hurler Michael Duignan, Murphy rounded off a fine performance with his third try.
