Dundalk's attempt to sign Bradford City striker Lawrence Davies in time for this evening's game against Shelbourne fell apart yesterday as the player has a groin injury that will delay the move until at least the weekend.

The 21-year-old, a former Welsh underage international who was released by Leeds just over a year ago, picked up the problem while on a loan spell at Hartlepool last month and the delay will be a blow to Jim McLaughlin who, already without Brian Byrne, could do with some cover for Peter Withnell up front.

Withnell was concussed after last week's collision with Michael Dempsey and is still doubtful for this game, leaving David Ward as the only regular first team forward available to him. To make matters worse Mick Doohan, who has played up front from time to time, is suspended for this evening's game.

Shelbourne, meanwhile, will be without Liam Kelly who was admitted to hospital yesterday with suspected glandular fever. Stephen Geoghegan, though, showed no adverse effects after last week's return to competitive action and should partner Tony Sheridan up front again tonight.

One man unlikely to be on the bus to Oriel Park, however, is full back Dave Smith who is expected to complete a move to Waterford United today.
