Nervous Galway wait

Galway footballers will await anxiously the referee's report from Sunday's Connacht League final victory over Roscommon

Galway footballers will await anxiously the referee's report from Sunday's Connacht League final victory over Roscommon. Forward Shay Walsh was sent off for a clash with Paul Noone shortly into the second half. Reports referred to the incident as being "off-the-ball", which could draw a lengthy suspension. Such a ban would constitute yet further misfortune for team manager John O'Mahony, who only last week lost another forward, Paul Clancy, to injury.

Cork hurlers emerged from the weekend with two serious injuries. Brian Corcoran, Hurler of the Year two seasons ago, broke a knuckle and Mike Morrissey a bone in his ankle in the league defeat by Wexford in Enniscorthy. "Brian will be out for a few weeks," said county PRO Pat Horgan, "it was a nasty knock. While I wouldn't want to rule out Mike Morrissey in the long term, realistically he'll be gone for a while."

Meanwhile, Dublin manager Tom Carr confirmed the seriousness of the hamstring injury to Colin Moran and expressed frustration at the fact that he had been about to substitute the player just before his injury. "Darren Homan came on immediately before we knew the extent of the damage to Colin," said Carr. "That was because we had him warming up already, as we had decided to take him (Moran) off before it happened."

Moran is now almost certain to miss the remainder of the under21 championship, should Dublin beat Meath in this weekend's Leinster final. Carr said that he had no regrets about playing Moran just a day after the under21 victory over Kildare. "No, I'm not sorry. We hadn't a whole lot of choice and Colin was anxious to play. I feel sorry for all the football he's involved with at the moment: Sigerson, under-21 championship and senior. That's all serious stuff; his schedule is too much."

Moran and Ian Robertson, who fractured a bone in his leg, may both be out for six weeks at least and are set to miss the first round of the Leinster championship on May 27th.

Waterford hurling full back Sean Cullinane looks to have aggravated his own chronic hamstring complaint during Sunday's defeat by Tipperary. He had to be replaced after 15 minutes.
