New members welcome

Forgive the pun, but anyone who qualifies to compete in the championship will be welcomed with open arms

Forgive the pun, but anyone who qualifies to compete in the championship will be welcomed with open arms. The event in question is the World One Armed Championship which takes place at Headfort Golf Club in Kells from June 9th to 16th when Michael O'Grady, a two-time winner of the title, and Brendan Swan, who reached last year's final in Wales, will head the home challenge in the face of some top foreign players.

Athlone's Noel Heavey, a member of the World Society of One Armed Golfers, believes that there are many Irish players who are eligible to compete who may not be aware of it. For instance, someone who has suffered neurological problems which cause paralysis of one side, but leaves the other fit and well, could compete.

"We do not wish impairment to anyone but, if it occurs, we would like to reach out to them and show that there are better alternatives to self chosen isolation," explained Heavey. "We would be pleased to welcome all who may be interested to learn more about one armed golf and a visit to the world championships would give people an opportunity to see what we are about. This is our shop window for new members or those already playing who may wish to improve as we will also hold clinics and demonstrations of golf in action."
