Schools' Rugby: Newbridge College will take no part in the Leinster schools' cup competitions proper this year as their junior team yesterday followed the seniors by being dumped out of the Fr Godfrey Cup at the first hurdle.

CUS took up the giant-killing mantle adopted by St Andrew's College last week by overcoming the Kildare school 7-5 in Kilternan.

The Leeson Street school will face King's Hospital for a place in the semi-finals, which also guarantees qualification to the Junior Cup first round against Gonzaga College on February 7th.

King's Hospital overcame Maynooth Post Primary School 8-0 in Barnhall with a first-half try from Stephen Hogan followed by a late penalty from Evan Lett. This was Maynooth's first taste of schools' cup rugby having played eight games to qualify for the competition.

Elsewhere, on a day where every game was hindered by the weather, High School edged past CBS Naas 7-0 in North Kildare. Number eight Ross Hannon crossed the line for the only try of game, which was converted by Dave Kenny.

The Rathgar school await the winners of St Gerard's and St Patrick's, Navan, after that fixture was postponed because the Donnybrook surface was unplayable yesterday. The game has been refixed for tomorrow in North Kildare as part of a double-header that sees the St Pat's seniors face St Andrew's in the Vinnie Murray Cup quarter-final.
