John Toshack is to take over at French club Saint Etienne

John Toshack is to take over at French club Saint Etienne. Toshack (51), takes over from Robert Nouzaret, who was sacked last week. Cardiff-born Toshack began his playing career as a striker with his home-town club and quickly became a fixture in the Welsh national side.

He later became Welsh national coach, but is best known for his spells as coach with Real Madrid (twice), Sporting Lisbon, Real Sociedad (also twice), and Deportivo La Coruna, and a stint in Turkey in charge of Besiktas.

Everton are planning to leave Goodison Park, their home since 1892, after placing a bid for a new site for a stadium at King's Dock, close to the River Mersey.

The Premiership side said they intended to build a 55,000 seat stadium with a retractable roof at King's Dock, but will not complete the deal until talks with the club's supporters have taken place.

Club owner Bill Kenwright said Everton needed to find a new ground because they could not increase the capacity at Goodison Park from 40,260. Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira believes one of the reasons for his problems with English referees may be because he is black.

The 24-year-old Frenchman has amassed £68,000 worth of fines from the English FA and has been sent off six times since joining Arsenal in August 1996.

Vieira is currently with his France team-mates for today's friendly with South Africa in Johannesburg.

Asked about his problems with referees in England, he told Le Parisien: "Am I a target because I'm a world champion? Is it because I'm a foreigner in England? Or simply because I'm black?

"I don't want to be naive, I know racism will still be present even after the year 2000."
