Steve Burtenshaw yesterday apologised to an English FA disciplinary hearing after admitting receiving an illegal payment while he was chief scout at Arsenal.

Burtenshaw, who accepted £35,000 from the Scandinavian agent Rune Hauge two months after John Jensen moved to Highbury from Brondby in September 1992, was charged after the Inland Revenue was alerted to a large sum of money deposited in an offshore account. Now chief scout at QPR, Burtenshaw will have an anxious wait until tomorrow to hear the FA ruling after judgment was deferred.

Mark Rutherford may be set for a surprise return to Shelbourne after it was confirmed that James Keddy is out for the rest of the season with a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Keddy, who signed from Derry City only last month, twisted his knee in the opening league game against Shamrock Rovers a fortnight ago.

The injury wasn't thought to be serious at first, but Keddy was informed on Tuesday night that he had damaged the cruciate ligament and will be out for the season.

Keely refused to speculate on Rutherford returning to Tolka Park, but did confirm that he is only on loan at English third division side Shrewsbury Town.
