Schools' rugby:  Newtown School advanced to the fifth round of the Munster Schools' Senior Cup with a deserved 20-15 victory over St Nessan's CC, Limerick, at the Clonmel RFC grounds yesterday.

St Nessan's landed an early penalty from outhalf Keith Earls. But Newtown replied with a Harvey Kinsella penalty and a try from Greg Deacon before half-time. Tries by Kinsella and Niall Fearon sealed the win, though Stephen Hayes and David O'Connell managed second-half tries for St Nessan's.

Three first-half tries helped St Clement's College overcome Bandon GS 22-12 in their third-round Munster Schools' Junior Cup tie at St Clement's, Limerick.

The home side led 17-5 at the break with tries from Ciarán Carberry, Liam Ryan and Geoffrey Ryan. Dean Tirnizi replied with a try for Bandon. Simon Ryan scored his side's fourth try near the end, and Chris Spearman got a late consolation try for Bandon.

Garbally College, Ballinasloe, cruised to a 15-0 win over St Attracta's College, Tubbercurry, in the Connacht Schools' Senior Cup second-round game at Hamilton park, Strandhill, yesterday.

Tries from Seán Carey and Marcus Scully gave the Galway side a 10-0 half-time lead. Alec Enraght-Mooney got their third try with four minutes left.

St Saran's, Ferbane, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Connacht Senior Cup by virtue of a 16-0 win over St Muredach's in Ballina. The visitors grabbed a try after 13 minutes through centre Aidan Keenaghan, and sustained pressure yielded an Aidan Wynne penalty on 62 minutes, a Kevin Lally try on 67 minutes and a Wynne penalty on full time.
