England meet Uruguay at Anfield in a friendly on Wednesday, but as Sven-Goran Eriksson prepares to name his squad this evening it is the World Cup that dominates all thoughts. The England manager yesterday mingled praise of Sol Campbell with a reminder that the player will have to re-establish himself with Arsenal if he hopes to be in the squad for Germany this summer.
The defender, who has played every minute of every England match at the past four major tournaments, walked out of Arsenal's defeat by West Ham this month at the interval amid speculation over problems in his private life. At present he is not in the Highbury line-up because of an ankle injury.
"He's a rock when he's physically fit and I think he will do everything to be ready for the World Cup," Eriksson said of the 31-year-old. "It might be his last. He must start to play sooner or later for Arsenal, otherwise I can't pick him. And it's the same with Jonathan Woodgate - I want to see him play regular football.
"If they play one game and not the other it's very difficult. Once you've chosen your 23 for the World Cup you can't change it once the tournament starts. You can't gamble. You have to be quite sure that they are fit, of course. Otherwise you might end up with a big problem."
Eriksson is taking a relaxed stance elsewhere. Despite limited opportunities with Chelsea, Shaun Wright-Phillips is judged to be seeing enough action to retain his place in the party next week. The manager is even "sure" that the winger will make the World Cup squad.
The normal series of injuries affects plans for the game with Uruguay. With Michael Owen still to recover from a broken metatarsal, Darren Bent should be named after scoring in three of Charlton's past four games.
Newcastle yesterday confirmed Owen will almost certainly not make his comeback from a foot fracture in the FA Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea next month, contrary to reports during the week.
Meanwhile, Ashley Cole is set to feature for the Arsenal reserves, against Tottenham, next week. The England left back has been sidelined since mid-January after straining a thigh muscle against Middlesbrough, which was his return to action after over three months out with a broken foot. ...
