Terenure College - 18 Wesley College - 12:SCHOOL'S RUGBY/Leinster Senior Cup: It wasn't an overture from Terenure College in yesterday's match at Donnybrook, despite the scoreline. They negotiated their passage to the next round, albeit at one stage it seemed certain to be without openside flanker Conor O'Hagan and full back and captain David Cazabon.

As O'Hagan lay motionless on the turf midway through the second half one feared a serious injury; it took 11 minutes for a neck brace to be fitted, a stretcher to be summoned and the player to be taken to the ambulance.

No sooner had he been deposited than the stretcher was called for again, this time for Cazabon.

Fortunately, both players were soon able to rejoin their team-mates on the sidelines, and none would begrudge the precautions taken over both injuries.

The delays meant referee Terence Deacon extended the match by about 16 minutes and Terenure's unease against a spirited and dogged Wesley team was palpable at the finish, with just a single score separating the teams.

It was no more than Wesley deserved on an afternoon in which they produced a wholehearted display. None epitomised this more than openside flanker Philip Rowe, the game's outstanding player, and he was ably supported by Roger Rhynehart, Chris Jackson, Jonathan Power and captain Alan Gray.

Terenure were the more accomplished side, outscoring their opponents by two tries to none. But first-match teething problems were evident, from poor option-taking to a lack of cohesion and patience.

Robert McCarthy was a handful on the wing, Keith O'Malley Farrell assured out of touch while outhalf Frank Gildea, prop Niall McCann and number eight Alex Dunlop never shirked the hard work.

Terenure's first try owed much to good fortune as a Gildea chip through didn't look unduly threatening until the ball kicked viciously over the Wesley line. Wing Andrew Sherlock appeared to get a hand to the ball without grounding it but the referee didn't deem it a knock-on as Gary Byrne followed up to plunge on the ball.

Cazabon missed the conversion but was more accurate on 20 minutes when, following good work by Neil Murphy and Keith Molloy to set up a ruck near the Wesley line, two long skip-passes allowed the full back to cross; he posted the extra points.

Wesley refused to bow the knee and a couple of penalties either side of half-time from outhalf Alan Large brought them to within a single score. Gildea dropped a neat goal, Large responded with his third penalty as Wesley would just not accept their fate.

They responded once again through a Large penalty after Byrne had eased Terenure 18-9 in front minutes earlier.
