Having visited Waterford for the first time last week, Derry made an historic first ever journey to Carlow and proceeded to dismantle the home side.
However, five minutes before half-time the home fans in Dr Cullen Park were hopeful of an upset when Simon Rea touched home a probing Johnny Nevin cross with his hand. That left it just 2-4 to 1-3, but five minutes into the second half Derry had swept to a commanding 4-7 to 1-3 advantage.
In first half injury time Gavin Diamond netted, having collected a long ball from skipper Enda Muldoon and with just three minutes gone after the restart Derry struck for goal number four from James Conway. It was left to Muldoon to put the final nail in the coffin when he fired home the fifth 15 minutes from time.
