Tennis: Former Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna retired from professional tennis after losing in the first round of the £325,000 WTA event in Filderstadt, Germany.

The 31-year-old Czech, who has captured 24 singles titles during her 13-year career, was outplayed 6-3 6-4 by Italian qualifier Silvia Farina in an hour and 25 minutes.

Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon champion, elected to retire after the Filderstadt event after failing to make a full recovery from a right ankle sprain and torn ligament suffered at the French Open in May.

She managed to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon this year, but had only two victories in four events coming into this tournament.
