Dubliner David O'Connell's penchant for producing at least one significant result in an Irish tennis event was very much on cue in the second round of the National Indoor Open Championships, sponsored by Pamela Scott, at Riverview last evening.

The Clontarf teenager played his usual studious game to oust a German prospect, Andy Winters, who is en route to a university scholarship in Atlanta. Winters' penetrating backhand appeared likely to see him through on the evidence of the first set which he pocketed in the tie break but O'Connell remained unruffled and scored some exhilarating winners on his way to a 6-7 6-3 7-5 win.

Top ranked Irish junior prospect Stephen Nugent coasted to a facile win over Donal Glennon. The Malahide player has a world under-18 ranking inside the top 100 and hopes to have better fortune than his older brother Michael whose career was cut short through injury.

Nugent's game, based on power from the back of the court, continues to show improvement and has come on in leaps and bounds since he won the ITF junior event at the same venue last summer. Yesterday, he afforded Glennon only two games.

Former top Irish junior Stewart Doyle was admitted to the draw after Davis Cup star George McGill withdrew and the Castleknock man showed good early form by ousting Belfast's Robert Sinclaire.

James Colhoun also showed that he is not short on ability to remain in the event and qualify for a match or two in the closing stages against a big gun. His straight-sets win over Conor D'Arcy was well plotted.
