O'Dwyer equals record

ATHLETICS : Adrian O'Dwyer (20), equalled Brendan Reilly's national indoor high jump record with a world-class 2

ATHLETICS: Adrian O'Dwyer (20), equalled Brendan Reilly's national indoor high jump record with a world-class 2.28-metre jump in Budapest yesterday and booked his place for the World Indoor Championships at the same venue on Friday week.

O'Dwyer, who improved his personal best of 2.20 metres at the national indoor championships in Belfast two weeks ago, brings to 10 the number of Irish athletes selected for the world indoor tests with a decision yet to be made on the men's or women's 4x400 metres relay teams. The team will be finalised by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, in one alteration to the expected selection, Niamh O'Sullivan has replaced Maria McCambridge on the Irish women's team for the World Cross Country Championships, in Brussels on March 20th-21st. McCambridge will focus on the World Indoor Championships in Budapest, and O'Sullivan, who was seventh in Sunday's inter-clubs championships in Roscommon, was the automatic replacement.

Otherwise the women's team comes from the top finishers at the inter-clubs, led by Catherina McKiernan. Similarly, the men's team consists of the top-six finishers last Sunday, starting with Séamus Power. Eritrean-born Azmera Gebrezgi has been selected for the junior women's race, pending confirmation of her Irish passport.
