A list of eight riders and nine horses was announced yesterday for the three-day event at this year's world equestrian games, which take place in Jerez, Spain in mid-September.
Jane O'Flynn, who recorded a best of the Irish finish when fourth in the IFG three-star at Punchestown last weekend, is named with both Kilnadeema Star and her Badminton ride Braveheart.
She is joined on the list by her fellow Badminton runners, Virginia McGrath with The Yellow Earl and Eric Smiley on Irish Patriot, both of whom have proven four-star form. Another on the list with a four-star record is the Australian bred Ashmore Scribble, on whom Hilda Hick Donohoe completed last month's Rolex Kentucky event in America.
The remaining quartet on the list all finished in the top 20 at Punchestown. They are Susan Shortt with Just Beauty Queen, who finished an impressive 10th on her three-star debut last weekend, Vina Buller and Glencara, who were drafted into the Irish team at the last minute when Sasha Harrison's Look Sharp went lame, Mark Kyle on the catch ride Drunken Disorderly and Ken Mahon with the stallion Test Flight.
A group of nine horses, including Look Sharp and another Eric Smiley ride, Macloud, who was coughing at Punchestown, will be running at next month's British three-star in Bramham, Yorkshire.
Carol Gee, who was lucky to escape serious injury in a hideous- looking fall with Sportsfield Iceman at the second last in Punchestown, has been given the all-clear to run Spirit Of Mae in Bramham.
The selectors are expected to add to the longlist after Bramham and will also be watching the form of Irish horses competing at the German three-star in Luhmuhlen the following week and at one-day internationals in July and August.
