Basketball Weekend round-up: The Wildcats' slump continues to ruin what looked set to be a good season. The Woman's Superleague came to a conclusion over the weekend with the Waterford women's losing streak now at three games.
They were beaten 78-58 by bottom-of-the-table Meteors on Saturday night. This means they have to compete in the quarter-finals, as only the top two teams progress straight to the semi-final.
They need to get Olivia O'Reilly and former schools sensation Gráinne Dwyer back on form, but the long-term absence of American Nicole Conway is the biggest hindrance.
Up next for them are Killester, who ran University of Limerick to six points over the weekend.
St Paul's claimed second spot in the league by beating Drimnagh Dynamos in overtime 82-81. Sarah Cartmill hit 36 points to clinch vital home advantage in the last four.
Glanmire secured the fourth spot with a win over Tolka Rovers, 90-77, with Adriana Speers hitting 29 points. This also gives them home advantage in the play-offs, against Drimnagh.
Meanwhile in the men's league, the disappointment of losing the cup final seems to be affecting Neptune's chances of salvaging something from the year. They lost again this week to Shamrock Rovers. They have won only twice in the league since November and are now level with the Killarney Lakers on 18 points, but the Kerry club have a game in hand. Wednesday's local derby against the Tralee Tigers will make things clearer.
The Hoops had Mike Trimmer making his debut after Wayne Houston left last week.
The Lakers, meanwhile, beat Northern Conference champions Killester 99-80 and UCD Marian held on to win against Southern Conference holders Tralee, to leave them in second place.
Third-place Star of the Sea can still leapfrog them andsecure a home play-off if they win their last game.
