When Anthony Taylor was jailed for 200 years earlier this week, after being convicted in California of assuming Tiger Woods' identity and running up expenses of $17,000 in his name, Golf Masters' HQ had two thoughts: (1) the sentence was a touch excessive and (2) Colin Montgomerie's managers must be beginning to wonder if someone is impersonating their £4.8 million man on golf courses in Europe and America.
Take a look at our table charting the progress to date of our big guns, namely the 12 players who were valued at £4 million and over for the 2001 Golf Masters. We'd hazard a guess that Monty's average earnings of £5,868 is just a little below what 1,191 managers were hoping for a third of the way through the competition when they invested over a third of their budgets in him.
Missing the cut at the Portugal Open didn't do much to improve their mood, and he won't be defending his French Open title this week. Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood's managers must be only marginally less disenchanted with their men, but at least both should be busy in the weeks ahead.
