Old Conna had six shots to spare over hosts Beech Park when winning The Irish Times Shield at the Leinster Alliance outing to Beech Park on Sunday. The Old Conna team of Diarmuid Leonard, Joe Drea, Declan Kerrigan and Ron Mason took the Shield to Beech Park for the second time in three years.
Leonard and Drea laid the foundations for victory with rounds of 70 nett and Kerrigan's 74 was enough to give them a comfortable six-shot win over Beech Park (220) with Lucan and the Curragh tieing for third place on 221. Leonard made it a double for the Old Conna club when he won the individual on a countback from clubmate Drea and Stewart Clarke from Lucan.
The best amateur gross was won by Lucan's Brian Dowling with a 76. John Langan continued his consistent form in the professional category. The Milltown professional, who won the last outing at Grange with a three-under-par 65, and added a one-under-par 71 to beat Foxrock's Leslie Walker into second place. Henry Byrne from Slade Valley was third with John Kelly (The Ward) and Gerry Bourke (Curragh) taking the next two places. This was the 74th running of The Irish Times Shield and 17 clubs and 12 professionals took part.
