CARLOW SFC SEMI-FINAL (replay)/Old Leighlin 2-7 Éire Óg 1-6:CARLOW CHAMPIONS Old Leighlin recovered from a poor start at a soaked Dr Cullen Park on Saturday.
A 10th minute goal from Éire Óg centre forward Alan O’Brien put the challengers 1-2 to 0-1 in front, but, crucially, Willie Minchin struck for an Old Leighlin goal just on half-time. The holders trailed 1-4 to 1-3 at the interval.
The game’s other crucial score came in the 37th minute when Old Leighlin left half forward David Bambrick scored a fine goal to put his side in front for the first time, leading 2-4 to 1-5.
Old Leighlin, with defenders Michael Meaney, John Hayden and Eamonn Fitzgerald outstanding, closed out the game in the final minutes with a brace of late points from centre forward Cathal Coughlan ensuring a first ever final meeting against Tinryland on Sunday next.
