Faced with the prospect of a trophyless season, Alex Ferguson will be contemplating a major shake-up at Manchester United. Here's a look at some possible targets and those facing the axe.
DEFENCE
Targets
Kevin Hofland (PSV) - The Dutch centre back is on his way out of PSV at the end of the season, and United are already believed to have made inquiries for his services.
Lilian Thuram (Juventus) - Plays right back for the France side and centre back for his club. Ferguson has long admired him, but would cost a small fortune.
Alessandro Nesta (Lazio) - Uncompromising yet stylish Italian international centre back currently partnering United old boy Jaap Stam.
On their way out?
Ronny Johnsen - Ferguson likes the Norwegian but he's injury-prone and at 32 has not long left anyway. He may stay for another year in an understudy role.
Denis Irwin - Wants to play on for another season but has virtually accepted it will not be at United.
Phil Neville - It was noticeable that Ferguson brought Irwin on instead of him in the semi-final second leg at Leverkusen. Has really dropped out of the reckoning this season and may be tempted to revive his career elsewhere.
MIDFIELD
Targets
None - Ferguson appears to have a surplus of riches.
On their way out?
Juan Veron - Failed to provide that something extra for United - in fact his arrival unsettled the side and Ferguson might be tempted to recoup his outlay.
ATTACK
Targets
No leading contender, though promising young candidates at other Premiership clubs could include Matt Jansen (Blackburn) and Jermain Defoe (West Ham).
On their way out?
Dwight Yorke - His Old Trafford career has been in terminal decline all season and is now at an end and he will be on his way in the summer.
