SOCCER: Republic of Ireland assistant manager and Aston Villa reserve team coach Kevin MacDonald, assisted by goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly, will be in charge from the bench for the Euro 2008 qualifying game away to Cyprus next month.

The Uefa's Control and Disciplinary Body, which met in Nyon, Switzerland yesterday, have banned manager Steve Staunton for one game after his dismissal in last Saturday's qualifier in Germany.

While suspended for one fixture, no fine was imposed on Staunton.

"I fully understand the charge of improper conduct being brought against me, I have apologised for my breach of acceptable behaviour on the night and I accept my punishment of a one-game ban," said Staunton, who will not be appealing the decision.

"I'm now looking forward to the next match against Cyprus and to another positive display from the lads." he said.

The suspension prevents Staunton from having any contact with the team or his staff from prior to and during the game. "While I won't be with the players for the two hours before the game, I know Kevin has the full respect and confidence of the players," added Staunton.

Earlier this week Staunton's international advisor, Bobby Robson, spoke of his wish to "get back to football with Stephen and the boys as soon as I can".

While few would doubt Robson's desire to make it to Cyprus to help out from the bench in Staunton's absence, it seems highly improbable.

The former England manager is recovering from an operation to remove a brain tumour and his doctors would be unlikely to sanction such an early return.
