The golfing world will be laughing at Australia after the first round of the Australian Open was abandoned yesterday due to rock-hard greens, U.S. PGA winner Rich Beem said.

The cancellation of the first round and reduction of the tournament to 54 holes also caused major embarrassment for officials and damaged relationships with sponsors and Australian media.

"I think we're all laughing, I think it is quite humorous," said Beem. "The players are beside themselves thinking "how can this happen".

The situation on the brown greens had reached crisis point by midday local time when group number 26 complained about the conditions on the third hole.
