A touchline conversion by Richard Ormonde six minutes from the end of extra-time sealed the Metropolitan Cup for St Mary's as they edged out Blackrock in a game of few chances and even fewer scores at Lakelands Park last night.

Ormonde's kick came after David Lyons had finished off a fine St Mary's move to score the only try of the game. The 80 minutes of normal time were littered with penalties and stoppages.

Out-halves David Lynagh and Fergal Campion kicked two penalties apiece to tie the game at 6-6. Lynagh gave Blackrock a six-point cushion with two penalties in extra time before Lyon's try enabled Ormonde to land the winning points.
