Ceire Smith loses split decision in Bucharest

Cavan flyweight is beaten by Turkish boxer Nur Caskun

Ceire Smith lost out on a split decision at the Womens European Championships in Bucharest in her last 16 bout with Turkey's Nur Caskun. The Cavan flyweight lost 2-1 to the aggressive Caskun in a close contest.

Probably drawn into brawling exchanges more than she would have liked, the taller Smith fell into too many close exchanges that edged the Turk ahead.

While her right jab was working and the back hand left found its mark, too often Caskun came wading in on the counter landing flurries from which there was little escape.

“I’m a counter puncher too …you have to sacrifice to try and score so…I knew it was close,” said Smith. “But it was the second round I think where I really messed up and let it get on top of me. But I knew it was close…”
