The Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia has been renamed after West Indies' World Twenty20-winning captain Darren Sammy.

The venue will now be known as the Darren Sammy National Cricket Ground, while one of the stands has been named after Windies opener Johnson Charles.

A West Indies Cricket Board media release read: “The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) would like to congratulate West Indies captain Darren Sammy and opener Johnson Charles for the honour their home country St. Lucia has bestowed on them.

“The Beausejour Cricket Ground will now be the Darren Sammy National Cricket Ground, and one of the stands will be named in Charles’ honour. Charles is also due to receive a plot of land.

“Both are fitting tributes to the hard work and dedication of the players who just completed an exciting victory to win the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 men’s title. Sammy was also captain of the 2012 team and makes the West Indies the only team to win this title twice. The honour is fitting and we salute the players.”

The announcement was made at a 'welcome reception' in St Lucia by Prime Minister Kenny D Anthony on Tuesday afternoon, the WICB added.

Sammy led the West Indies to a dramatic victory over England in Kolkata on Sunday, Carlos Brathwaite smashing four successive sixes in the last over off Ben Stokes.
