Ireland hockey team

16-man squad for Rio

JONNY BELL
Hometown:
Lisburn. Age: 29. Position: Defender.
One of Ireland's key defenders for last four years. Successfully rotates with Harte and Gleghorne in the centre of the Irish defence and also plays outside left and right. Missed Ireland's bronze medal win last year in the European Championships through injury.

CHRIS CARGO
Hometown:
Newtownards. Age: 30. Position: Midfield
Came out of Bangor Grammar and plays in Belgium. The engineer is a versatile player who has been involved in most of Ireland's campaigns over the last six years. Now with 134 Irish caps, he is vastly experienced and not fazed by the German and Dutch pool threats.

PETER CARUTH
Hometown:
Belfast. Age: 28. Position: Forward.
A hard running, tough player, he spent time in Monkstown hockey club before moving back to Annadale for the 2016-17 season. One of Ireland's bustling, competitive players, he works hard on and off the ball. Unafraid to mix up his game and in possession of a decent strike.

MITCH DARLING
Hometown:
Dublin. Age: 28. Position: Forward.
Light on his feet, he's a quick forward playing with Rotterdam. His first cap came as an 18-year-old in Poland and since then he has brought his goal tally up to 44 from 158 caps, as of June. Works as a solicitor but played in all of tournaments over the last four years.

PAUL GLEGHORNE
Hometown:
Belfast. Age: 28. Position: Defender.
Uncompromising in defence alongside Conor Harte, he has played against his older brother Mark, who plays with Britain. A top quality tackler, he was among the players who beat Britain on the way to winning a European Championship bronze medal last year.

KYLE GOOD
Hometown:
Dublin. Age: 24. Position: Forward.
One of the quickest penalty corner takers, which gives Ireland options at offensive set-pieces. He has a nice soft touch when required and is a powerful player with pace too. The 24-year-old has 66 caps as of June 23rd and has scored 15 goals at international level.

RONAN GORMLEY
Hometown:
Cork. Age: 33. Position: Defender/Midfield.
The most experienced player on the team and Ireland's record caps holder. As of June 23rd, he had 235 caps, has captained the side 121 times and has been in three Olympic campaigns. Germany based, he's an adaptable defender, largely right-sided but can fill in on the left.

DAVID HARTE (capt)
Hometown:
Kinsale. Age: 28. Position: Goalkeeper.
Won world goalkeeper of the year award for 2015 and is one of the outstanding keepers in world hockey. The greatest asset Ireland have going to Rio. Standing at 6'5'', he fills the goal, works his angles wonderfully and has the reactions.

CONOR HARTE
Hometown:
Kinsale, Cork. Age: 28. Position: Defender.
Twin to goalkeeper David, he plays in a sweeping role at the back. He is also a central distributor and has the vision to pick out long sweeping passes from his pivotal position. Made his debut as an 18-year-old 10 years ago. He began his hockey in Bandon.

JOHN JACKSON
Hometown:
Belfast. Age: 30. Position: Defender.
A defender often found popping up everywhere on the pitch. Captained Ireland when they missed qualification for London 2012. Currently the head of Hockey at Marlborough College, where one Kate Midleton played before marrying English royalty.

JOHN JERMYN
Hometown:
Cork. Age: 34. Position: Midfield.
Had not been in the squad since 2012 but returned along with his Irish goalscoring record. Ireland's set-piece specialist and has netted 89 goals, a return of more than one every two matches. A full-time solicitor, the C of I player had stints in the Netherlands and Belgium.

EUGENE MAGEE
Hometown:
Banbridge. Age: 30. Position: Midfield.
A former county minor hurler who transitioned to hockey in school. One of the most experienced players and was the second Irish player to pass the 200 cap mark. Technically strong, Magee combines his dribbling ability and close skills with strength on the ball.

SHANE O'DONOGHUE
Hometown:
Dublin. Age: 23. Position: Midfield.
Came from west Dublin's Glenanne, an important nursery for international players over the years. Debuted for Ireland as an 18-year-old. A prolific goalscorer, he is one of the players on strike at corners, which has set him apart to the tune of 50 goals from 99 caps.

ALAN SOTHERN
Hometown:
Dublin. Age: 29. Position: Forward
Out and out goal sniffer, picking up on loose balls and being in the right place at the right time, he has amassed 58 goals from 132 caps. A former St Andrew's pupil, the Pembroke player is one of the most prolific goalscorers of all time. Works as a personal trainer.

KIRK SHIMMINS
Hometown:
Dublin. Age: 22. Position: Midfield.
Broke in following Ireland's miss at London 2012. The Pembroke midfielder is a real worker and light on his feet. His energy and willingness to get involved earned him a place in the 2013 European Championship squad despite having just three caps. He now has 68 caps.

MICHAEL WATT
Hometown:
Belfast. Age: 29. Position: Forward.
Another natural goalscorer. With 55 goals from 186 caps, it is not as impressive as Jermyn or O'Donoghue but it is excellent for a non set-piece player. He scored the winner against England in 2012, the first win over them in 12 years.
