McLaren are trying to line up a shock move for Fernando Alonso. Six years after Alonso departed McLaren in acrimonious circumstances, team principal Martin Whitmarsh has revealed he would love to have the Spaniard back at Woking.
In confirming indirect talks have taken place, Whitmarsh added: “Are we interested in Fernando? Yes. Any team would be. I’d be delighted to speak to him.”
Meanwhile Sebastian Vettel was in a class of his own during second qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix, his lap time of 1:44.249 more than half a second clear of team-mate Mark Webber.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone will have to wait until next year before learning whether he faces a trial in Germany into alleged bribery.
The Munich prosecutor's office has confirmed a decision on whether the case moves forward to trial will not be made this year. Ecclestone was indicted in July with regard to a €32.5 million payment made to former banker Gerhard Gribkowsky to help smooth the sale of F1 to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, in 2006.
