Setanta Ó hAilpín has been released by AFL side Greater Western Sydney. The former Cork hurler was one of five players delisted by the franchise.

"I want to thank all these players for their contribution to the club and wish them all the very best in the future" said GWS general manager of football Graeme Allan.

Ó hAilpín (30) was Young Hurler of the Year and selected as an All-Star in 2003, but left Ireland shortly after Cork’s defeat to Kilkenny in that year’s final.

He signed for AFL side Carlton but never fully got his career off the ground with the Melbourne side. He remained with them until 2011, when he departed for GWS. Injury struck again, however, with Ó hAilpín suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury early in his time with GWS.

Despite the setback it is considered unlikely that Ó hAilpín (30) will return to Ireland and hurling, as he has previously stated his intention to remain in Australia.
