It could pay to ignore the obvious in the last race at Lingfield today. Yet Again is sure to be all the rage for the Rolling Stone Handicap after an easy victory over course and distance on Monday.
He sprinted clear from the distance under Darryll Holland to score by a comfortable five lengths and will be seen as a "good thing" under only a 5lb penalty. But punters starved of turf action and having a rare bet on the all weather should beware.
Monday's race was none too competitive an affair. And Yet Again faces no easy task conceding 18lb to Pair Of Jacks this time.
Pair Of Jacks has improved after a move to Gary Moore and has been in fine form over hurdles of late, winning at Plumpton, Fakenham and Kempton.
With the cold weather denying him the chance to add to his tally over jumps at present, Moore has chosen instead to exploit a very favourable handicap mark on the Flat.
Pair Of Jacks figures on bottom weight today, not having won a race on the level for more than four years. But in that time he has been campaigned almost exclusively at seven furlongs and a mile, trips which seem too short for him nowadays.
His hurdling exploits show stamina is no problem for him. And he can confidently be expected to show himself very well handicapped now that he steps up to a mile and a half for the first time. The six year old has a much better chance of resuming winning ways today than his odds are likely to suggest.
Pat Haslam can pay for their journey down from Middleham by landing a double with Ultra Beet and Ultra Boy. Ultra Beet ran a good third at Wolverhampton last time and can take the Too Many Cooks Handicap at the expense of Captain Carat who ideally needs a more strongly run race than he is likely to get here.
Well handicapped Ultra Boy has not been seen out since he landed a nursery at Redcar in August but, would not to have been sent all the way down for the Bird In The Hand Handicap were fitness a worry.
