Former US Open champion Corey Pavin clinched his first PGA Tour title in more than 10 years at the Milwaukee Open in Wisconsin yesterday, completing a start-to-finish victory by two shots.
Boosted by an eagle-two at the eighth where he holed out with his second shot from 172 yards, the 46-year-old American fired a three-under-par 67 to finish on 20-under 260.
Two strokes clear at the start of the day, Pavin made his first move with a birdie at the par-three fifth and effectively put the tournament beyond doubt after doubling his lead by the turn.
Although he failed to pick up another shot on the back nine and was chased hard by playing partner Jerry Kelly, he held on to claim the 15th PGA Tour title of his career.
It was his second victory at the Milwaukee Open, having first triumphed in 1986.
"I've never given up on myself and I felt good that I could prove to myself that I could win again," Pavin told reporters after receiving the winner's cheque for $720,000.
Having putted well all week, the Tour veteran was delighted to see his six-iron approach at the eighth bounce three times on the green before ending up in the hole.
"That was huge," Pavin added. "I had been playing real solidly, hitting a lot of greens, but I just couldn't seem to get a putt to go in.
"And then I go hole a shot and that gave me a nice cushion."
Local favourite and Wisconsin native Kelly shot a 67 to finish alone in second place with twice champion Jeff Sluman (64) a further stroke back in third.
