HOCKEY:IT WAS a weekend of high scoring all round with 37 goals netted over five games in the Leinster Senior League and that included a couple of teams being brutally put to the sword. Both Pembroke and Fingal made it into double figures with 14 -goal and 12-goal wins respectively against Bray and the students of UCD.
Pembroke, however, put paid to a wholly satisfactory weekend for Fingal when beating them 2-0 at Whitechurch Park yesterday in the semi-finals of the Leinster Senior Cup. That win puts Pembroke into the St Patrick's Day final against the Tallaght side (although there is still debate going on as to whether Holy Week will interfere with that Monday fixture) Glenanne, who defeated Three Rock Rovers 4-3 in the other semi-final.
That tense game finished 3-3 in normal time before Glenanne and Irish playmaker Stephen Butler grabbed the second of his two strikes with a golden goal to secure his side's victory.
Pembroke's 16-goal weekend is probably one of their best for some time while Glenanne's more modest tally of four yesterday against Rovers and three on Saturday against Kilkenny keeps them in the hunt for silverware in both competitions.
But perhaps the result of the weekend was YMCA's 1-1 draw with Monkstown. The point puts greater distance between YMCA and the bottom of the table after a fractious game in which more than a handful of yellow cards were issued.
Elsewhere it was a poor weekend for Rovers. Out of the cup now and also drawing with Corinthians in the league on Saturday gives them a poor return for their efforts. They went 2-0 up against the Whitechurch Road side on Saturday before being pulled back to 2-2. Peter McConnell grabbed one for Rovers from the penalty spot while Mitch Darling added the other. Corinthians goals were shared between Lucas Piccioli and Miles Warren.
