Recovering from an Australian bush fire in a fiercely paced opening half, Pembroke Wanderers found the extra stamina, notably through Devin Donnelly, to overpower Corinthians in the second period to carry off the Cable & Wireless-backed Leinster Senior Cup for the fourth time in a row at Serpentine Avenue yesterday.
Pembroke made the more settled start and seized the lead when Gordon Elliott raced onto a pass by Francis de Rosa to angle home a reverse-stick shot. But Corinthians got a flame going to zip through the holders' cover and soon were on level terms. The quick-moving Dan Williams delivered a cross for his fellow Tasmanian Aaron Clauson to sink the equaliser and then an incision by Colin Stewart gave Mark Magnier the chance to make it 2-1.
Corinthians' momentum might well have been maintained after the interval if an inspired lob by Stewart had not barely missed the target, allowing Pembroke a reprieve on which they built steadily. First Donnelly forced Gordon Clarke to yield a penalty stroke, converted by Justin Sherriff, and from the next attack Stephen Stewart scrambled the ball over the line after a Paudie Carley short corner had been parried.
Pembroke's fourth goal was a worthy coup de grace as Donnelly combined twice in a zigzag move with Sherriff, who finished the thrust in typical fashion. Corinthians could do no more than reply through Colin Ross on the final hooter.
A double strike by Stephen Jones and an opportunist goal by David Bane earned 3-1 and 1-0 wins for Railway Union and Aer Lingus against Trinity and YMCA, respectively, to ease their Leinster Senior League relegation worries on Saturday.
Trinity as well as Avoca, who lost 3-2 to Three Rock Rovers, are now in the most vulnerable positions - though Avoca have destiny in their own hands as their two final games are against Railway and Aer Lingus.
Glenanne strengthened their grip on second spot in the table in inflicting a 6-1 defeat on depleted Monkstown, whose prime activity over the weekend was to fete their new honorary life member, Jimmy O'Connor.
