Golf: Kenny Perry was on course to record back-to-back victories on the US Tour last night as he entered the closing holes of his final round of the Memorial Tournament with a four-shot lead over Lee Janzen.
Perry, who captured the Colonial in Texas last week, was on cruise control yesterday as he retained a firm grip on his challengers at Jack Nicklaus's superb lay-out in Dublin, Ohio.
He covered the front nine in four-under-par 32, and it was just a question of easing over the line to collect the winner's cheque in the €5 million event.
Padraig Harrington had two birdies and two bogeys in a final round 72 to finish on two under and in a share for 13th place. He started badly with a bogey at the short fourth, but collected birdies at the 10th and long 15th, before letting a shot go at the 17th.
On the Champions Tour, Des Smyth fired a fine, five-under-par 67 to jump up the leaderboard in the Music City Championship at the Gaylord Opryland course in Tennessee.
It included a run of four birdies in five holes from the 12th, and was good enough to move Smyth from 43rd spot into the top 25.
But Jim Ahern maintained a stranglehold on the competition, with a five-shot lead going into the final nine.
