PGA TOUR: Carl Pettersson stretched his lead to three shots midway through the final round at the Memorial tournament yesterday to put the Swede within sight of his second PGA Tour title.
Pettersson, who began the final round clinging to a two shot advantage, again played steadily at the Muirfield Village Golf Club mixing two birdies with a bogey on his outward nine to move three clear of Australia's AdamScott and American Brett Wetterich.
Scott, looking to improve on his third-place finishes in his last two starts, had a sizzling first nine that included four birdies to move him within two of the lead before stumbling into the turn with a bogey at the 10th to slip back.
US Masters champion Phil Mickelson made a wild start with bogeys on the opening two holes then hitting back with birdies at three and four.
But the world number two's erratic progress continued with a bogey-birdie on five and six before reeling off three straight pars.
Spain's world number seven Sergio Garcia closed on a positive note with three birdies on a bogey free back nine for three-under 69 but will finish well down the leaderboard at two-under 286.
Number four Vijay Singh closed out a disappointing week with a two-over 74 for a final total of two-over 291 but the players most happy to see the back of Muirfield Village will be South Africans world number three Retief Goosen and number six Ernie Els.
Goosen, a twice US Open champion, leaves Dublin without breaking par carding a final round three-over 75 while Els signed for a nine-over 81 after a horrendous back nine that included a triple bogey and a pair of double bogeys.
CHALLENGE TOUR: Spain's Alvaro Quiros produced a fantastic winning final round performance of six-under-par 64 at the Morson International Pro-Am Challenge to stun Welshman Mark Pilkington into second place after the Welshman had dominated the event at the Marriott Worsley Park Hotel and Country Club for the first three rounds.
As is often the case in golf, the man who dominated the tournament for the first 54 holes was overtaken on final day by a player who had gone about his business quietly and efficiently before emerging from the chasing pack on the final day to steal victory.
Quiros finished on 13-under-par 267, three clear of Pilkington with Norway's Jan Are Larsen and Belgium's Nicholas Vanhootegem a shot further back.
LPGA TOUR: South Korea's Seon Hwa Lee became the third Rolex First-Time Winner of the season at the ShopRite LPGA Classic after a final round 63 gave her a 16-under-par total of 198 and a three-shot winning margin over Jeong Jang, Sherri Steinhauer and Annika Sorenstam.
Lee, a 2006 LPGA Tour Rookie, increases her lead in the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year race.
LET TOUR: France's Stephanie Arricau, who led by two shots overnight, held on to win her third European Tour title with a final round of 70 in the KLM Open at Eindhoven.
The 32-year-old winner of the 2004 French and Spanish Opens had four birdies to finish on 12-under-par 204 and she won by a shot from Germany's Anje Monke.
Nottingham's Liza Walters, in her second year on tour, had a career-best result after posting a joint best-of-day 69 for a share of eighth place on four under par.
Rebecca Coakley fired a final round of 72 for a three-under-par total of 213 and a share of 11th place.
