It was very nearly, but not quite, a heroic adieu to first division football in France for Tony Cascarino on Saturday when he scored both goals for relegation-threatened Nancy in their 2-0 win over Auxerre, their final game of the season and his final game for the club.

Unfortunately, Marseille nicked a 2-2 draw at Sedan and that was enough to keep them up and send Nancy down, on goal difference (just two goals of a difference, to be exact). Still, Cascarino, who will play for third division French side Red Star next season, finished amongst the division's leading scorers, with 13 league goals. Hats off to Tony.

A special mention too for Cherry Orchard old boy Brian McGovern, who made his first team debut for Arsenal yesterday, coming on as a sub in the game against Newcastle. But our player of the week award goes to defender Andy O'Brien, who played no small part in keeping Liverpool scoreless yesterday on Bradford City's way to Premiership survival. And, to be honest, we wouldn't have bet a semi-chewed cheese sandwich on the Irish under-21's club playing anything other than first division football next season. Funny old game.
