Skirmishes broke out last night between Manchester United and Roma supporters, despite a major policing operation. About 100 people were involved in clashes outside Old Trafford as the turnstiles opened for the Champions League clash. Police moved in swiftly with mounted officers and dogs to separate fans, and said they had the situation under control.

Tensions had been high following clashes in Rome during the first leg a week ago when 11 United fans were taken to hospital and the club accused Italian police of handing out "indiscriminate beatings".

Despite Greater Manchester police's claim that Roma's 'Ultra' supporters were unlikely to travel to Manchester, one group of fans unfurled a banner proclaiming allegiance to the hardcore group. The clashes were described by police as "isolated".

Bottles and missiles were exchanged before police moved in, some wielding batons, to arrest a handful of people. One man was led away with blood streaming down his face.

Calm appeared to be restored as the Roma fans entered the stadium. A helicopter flew overhead, while police monitored the situation with 160 surveillance cameras inside and outside the stadium. About 3,800 Roma fans had travelled for the match.
