While it is occasionally good sport to take a hammer and chisel to the IRFU for their dealings with the three positive drug results from last season, they have recently pointed out that they have been one of the leading administrations in the fight against performance enhancing substances. According to chief executive Phillip Browne, the IRFU spent over £30,000 last year conducting over 100 tests on players at a cost of around £200 a test. In conjunction with the UK Sports Council, the IRFU have carried out the tests all over Ireland. Twelve tests at under-21 level, 16 in the All-Ireland League, 12 in the National squad, 48 on the provincial squads and six in the academy, the IRFU argues is quite a serious effort at confronting the problem. And the findings? Well, so far it's all positive news.
