Potter claims maiden title

Golf: Ted Potter Jr held his nerve to win the Greenbrier Classic from fellow-American Troy Kelly in a tense play-off. The 28-year-old, ranked 218 in the world, claimed victory with a 4ft birdie putt at the third extra hole following an exquisite tee shot.

He could even afford to miss an easy five-footer on the previous hole which would have given him victory. Kelly, whose previous best finish on the PGA Tour was tied-37th, looked to be heading for victory in regulation play at the US$1million tournament at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

But Potter, who was four shots behind with five holes to play, finished eagle-birdie for a 64 and a four-round total of 264, which Kelly (66) could only match.

Charlie Wi and rookie Charlie Beljan were tied for third a further two shots back, while Webb Simpson had a disastrous back nine, hitting three straight bogeys to surrender a one-shot lead and slip to joint-seventh.

Simpson, who had scores of 65, 66 and 65 in his first three rounds, could not put his finger on why things had gone wrong on Sunday. "I don't know," he told the PGA Tour's official website. "It's just the nature of the game. You go from not making any mistakes all week to making them all on the back nine."

The 26-year-old from North Carolina will now take a break - missing the Open later this month - because his wife is due to give birth to the couple's second child.

"It's one of those things where I'm going to take the positives from this week and the things that let me down today," added Simpson, whose next tournament will likely be the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at the start of August.

"I'll take a look at that and try to go out and work on it. Every situation I've been in like this, where I've had a tough Sunday or a tough finish, I've been able to learn from it and it's helped me down the road."
