Olympics: The head of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) marketing section, Dick Pound, is to join the battle to replace outgoing president Juan Antonio Samaranch, according to sources close to the Canadian.
Pound (59), president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), will be the fifth candidate for the most powerful job in world sport.
Rowing: Debbie Stack, the Trinity coach for today's Corcoran Cup between the senior women's eights of Trinity and UCD (starts 4.45 from O'Connell Bridge), has what must be a unique record in the event. The teacher from Offaly won four Corcoran Cups from 1995 to 1998 - the first three for UCD, and the final one for Trinity.
Tennis: Yvonne Doyle won through to her third final in as many weeks at the Girobank Tour event in Sunderland yesterday. In the singles quarterfinal, Doyle came back from one set down to beat Yorkshire's Helen Morgan 4-6 7-5 6-0.
In the semi-final she took on Norfolk junior Nicola Trinder and won 6-0 7-6, taking the tie break 7-3.
Cycling: The long-awaited validation of a doping test for endurance stimulant EPO (erythropoietin) ended yesterday when the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced that their test would be in use as of April 1st.
The UCI thus become the first federation to employ the test. The test will be applied after races, but riders could also be tested twice in one day if the results of their morning blood test shows a suspect hematocrite (red blood cell) count, or a suspect level for lesser developed blood cells.
